I was told in a lecture about some botanical gardens just next to the uni- they’re just a collection of glass houses really but they looked from the photos to have some interesting plants inside.

So today i decided to explore them. I set out with camera, sketch book and a variety of pencils and pens; only to find them closed!! Not to be discouraged, i tried to find another way in, and came across a nature reserve, with a little stream and plenty of woodland.

I found lots and lots of birds, not all of which i could see- but the trees were filled with birdsong. It really made me realise how crap human hearing is at pinpointing sounds! I was trying to photograph a blackbird which was exhibiting somewhat unusual behaviour- it was stood on the ground and launching itself into a pile of leaves every few seconds. It was too far away to see whether it was after grubs or nest material, but i zoomed my camera to the max and got a couple of shots. Then it disappeared because some noisy humans were coming up the footpath, one of whom asked me what i was photographing and gave me some bread with which to feed a woodpecker he’d seen further up!

I followed his advice, but couldn’t find the woodpecker, i found a jay instead and had to run to catch it long enough to take its photo.

I also found some obliging great tits and took their photograph as well. Below are some of the pictures i took.

I’ve just finished this new painting:

I’m sorry about the poor photo- the light wasn’t good enough and it was too wet to stand up!

**I’ve changed it now but again, the quality isn’t that great. **

It’s supposed to represent the repression of women before we got the vote- she is being silenced because she doesn’t have the vote.

As always, feedback is appreciated!

Yay! The picture is done! I think I’ve been looking at it too much to really give it a critical opinion, but i’m quite satisfied with it. I think it at least has the look of me! Oh well, it’s been a big learning experience. I have bought a book of artists and paintings from the arts centre- it’s by DK and is simply called ‘Art’. Inspiring stuff!

Also I now have a Christmas playlist ^_^ so suggestions please!! I can’t wait to come home!!!!

Here are some charcoal sketches I did yesterday, one is a self portrait the other is a portrait of my boyfriend, he doesn’t really look that cross…! :)

I’m quite pleased with how these turned out really… I have been looking at some paintings and trying to work out how they made the people look so real. I love ‘the Toilet of Venus’, the skin tone is just amazing. I really want to be able to paint like that! I’m working on turning the self portrait into a painting, but i’m not sure how it’ll turn out!

a self portrait

Inspired by mum’s blog: http://julielea.wordpress.com/ and the film Julie and Julia, which I’ve just seen, I’m going to attempt to write a blog! I think post will be intermittent- i’m not very good at scheduling my day and often forget things like this…. O:) Anyhow here’s a picture i drew yesterday on my touchscreen laptop. You should get quite a few of these in future! :) ta ta for now
